Computers on the Web use the file extension - the string of characters which follow the period in the file name - to identify the format of a file. In addition, every computer maintains a list of associations between specific file types and extensions; it is therefore required that the correct file name extension - as defined on any particular ERes installation - be included in each file name. Some common file formats and the corresponding file name extensions are:

File formatFile name extension
Excel spreadsheet .xls
GIF image .gif
HTML document .html
JPEG image .jpeg
PDF file .pdf
plain text document .txt
Word document .doc
WordPerfect document .wpd
